The giant Provençal reed is one of the tallest herbaceous plants, reaching up to 6-33 feet in height. It grows rapidly and is very robust. Native to the Mediterranean region and East Asia, it was introduced into many hot subtropical and temperate zones for use as an ornamental plant; then cultivated to control erosion, provide shelter from the wind, and for production of the stems which are used in the craft industry.
