A food staple in Iran for thousands of years, the tree became popular all across the Mediterranean Basin before arriving in California in the 19th century. It thrived in this hot, dry region and California now produces over the half the world’s almond supply. The bearer of many symbols, such as immortality, the almond is eaten for its nutritional value, and the oil is used to soothe the skin.
