A small shrub that grows in dry and sunny conditions, montpellier rock-rose can be recognized by evergreen leaves that contain an inflammable aromatic resin. This plant species is a pyrophyte, which means it needs fire to produce new shoots—hence its nickname “phoenix plant” in reference to the mythical bird that rises from the ashes.
