The apricot is thought to have originated in the mountainous regions of Central Asia, and not Armenia, as its botanical name suggests. It is here that the tree became widespread after being transported by caravans on the Silk Road. Introduced to France in the 15th century, it soon appeared at Versailles thanks to La Quintinie, a French agronomist and gardener. The small, round, velvety fruit of the apricot is made into delicious jams and other sweets. A nourishing oil is extracted from its seeds.
