Manioc is native to tropical South America, and has been known in Peru for 4,000 years. It was exported to Africa and India during the 19th century; then to Asia in the 20th century. There are many varieties of manic, and it has become an important food source. The leaves are eaten as a vegetable, the tubers provide flower or tapioca, and can also be used as the base for certain alcoholic beverages.
