Chicory is a plant belonging to the sunflower family, or Asteraceae, and one of the earliest cited in recorded history. Chicory’s heliotropism—the opening and closing of its flowers in response to sunlight—was thought to give it magical powers. It was believed that a young woman who uprooted the plant ensured the deep affection of her beloved.
