Alpine willowherb can be found growing on the edges of glaciers, among piles of soil, stones, and boulders known as moraine. In order to grow and multiply in this hostile rocky environment, the plant has developed some ingenious strategies. Its powerful underground roots are capable of capturing water hidden deep between these glacial deposits, and send out underground shoots to colonize the rocky terrain.
