It is an extremely robust tree with a powerful root system that can reach deep underground water reserves, enabling it to withstand long periods of drought. This ability has captivated local communities who consider the tree to be sacred. The desert date is an important part of local daily life, providing food for people and livestock, and is also used in building, and for fuel.
